It has been an exciting year in general, but for the OctoMY™ project in particular!
In summary:
- Development has started again after being borderline dormant for a number of years.
- LLMs have become mainstream
- NVIDIA is talking about actual physical robots being the next big thing.
- AI security and the risks associated with letting AGIs roam freely have reached the headlines and the consciousness of most people as a real threat instead of just a sci-fi trope.
I think the OctoMY™ project is more relevant than ever, and I also think that 2025 might be the year when it breaks through finally! Development has been steady throughout 2024 and a lot of big changes have taken place.
All this over the backdrop of global economic slowdown, deterioration of the global order, wars and conflicts erupting all over. The decline of many large countries around the world due to collapsing demographics. The inevitable rise in immigration across borders into first world countries with inherent cultural friction this brings with it.
A possible collapse of the Russian and Chinese economy. A possible conflict between China and Taiwan.
Automation and robotics will undoubtedly play an increasingly essential part in our future. The FPV drone showing itself to be the dominant weapon on the battlefield, adding automation and AI to the control will undoubtedly show up.
Geriatric care for the growing elderly population will be the task of the emerging class of care robots.
With energy infrastructure under attack globally, any smart technology to save, store and redistribute energy will surely become increasingly important. Maybe electric cars are not popular, but the price of gas may make them inevitable. And so is lighter forms of personal transportation such as electric scooters.
With global shipping under threat, governments across the globe are scrambling to ramp up local industrialization, and with labor costs being the biggest barrier, any automation that can replace human labor will be significant.
I am a very optimistic and hopeful person. I think that despite our troubles, 2025 can be a good year for us all.
Happy New Year!
